Steam is the largest storefront in PC gaming. Accounts can be quite expensive, and in terms of sentimental value as well. Losing your account is not great. So how do you prevent people from hacking into your Steam account and stealing it? Keep reading to find out.

1. Act Fast

The next moment that you realize that someone might have hacked into your Steam account, you should take action. The longer it takes for you to see it, the more serious damage can be caused to your account, very much so if there’s credit card information attached.

2. Change the Password

In case you can still log in, your first step should be changing your password. The intruder presumably knows your old password already, so if you have other accounts with the same password, they could be compromised as well. Get into your Steam account through a browser, next click on the arrow which is near your profile name, and choose ‘Account Details’. On this page, find ‘Account Security’ and click on ‘Change my password’. Then you will have to go through a security check, and finally, you’ll be able to reset your password.

3. The Account Recovery

If you can’t get back into your Steam account, then you will have to go use Steam’s account recovery system. Open the Steam login page and press ‘Forgot your password?’ below the log in fields. On the next page, you’ll have some options to recover the account. In case a hacker has stolen your account, there’s a special choice for that, too. Choose the option that best describes your situation and follow the steps that you’re suggested.

4. Steam Guard

Consider turning on Steam Guard, Valve’s two-factor authentication service, if you aren’t using it at the moment. You can use it through email, however, the app is more secure and integrated. Open your account details page, go to the security section, and choose ‘Manage Steam Guard’. There you can turn Steam Guard on, and decide whether you want the email and app version of it.
