After months of controversies and drama,
bringing to an inglorious end the tenure of
Ibrahim Magu, President Muhammadu Buhari
has finally handed Abdulrasheed Bawa the
baton as the new anti-corruption sheriff in
town.
Bawa, a 40-year-old trained EFCC prosecutor,
was appointed the substantive chairman of
the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC).
In a letter directed to the Nigerian Senate on
Tuesday, February 16, President Buhari
directed the upper chamber, as a matter of
constitutional urgency, to confirm Bawa,
saying he is "acting in accordance with
Paragraph 2(3) of Part1, CAP E1 of EFCC
Act 2004."
As the country awaits the new poster boy of
the country's most formidable anti-corruption
institution, Legit.ng outlines five facts about
the new EFCC czar.
He also holds a Masters in International
Affairs and Diplomacy.
2. Career as EFCC investigator
Bawa is an intrepid investigator for the EFCC.
He boasts a "vast experience in the
investigation and prosecution of Advance Fee
Fraud cases, official corruption, bank fraud,
money laundering, and other economic
crimes."
Impressively, he is one of the pioneer EFCC
cadet officers since 2005. He is currently the
Lagos zonal head of the anti-graft agency.
3. Just 40 years
If eventually confirmed as the substantive
chair man of the EFCC by the Senate, Bawa
will go down in history as the most "
youthful" man to head the anti-corruption
commission.
4. Professional exposure
Bawa boasts of experience and confidence
as seen in his intimidating CV. He is a young
investigator who has had training in many
countries including the US and UK.
5. Malami's cousin?
Bawa is said to be a cousin to the minister of
justice and attorney-general, Abubakar
Malami, though the truth behind this claim
has not been established.
Legit.ng recalls that Muhammed Umar took
over the affairs of the agency pending the
conclusion of the investigation into
allegations made against Ibrahim Magu.
President Buhari on Friday, July 10, appointed
Umar to take over the chairmanship of the
anti-graft agency in an acting capacity.
