The opposition Peoples Democratic Party has knocked the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), for saying that his regime has succeeded with the resources and time available to it. The President had declared on Thursday that history and posterity would judge his government over its efforts at restoring security in Nigeria and developing the nation’s economy. He also declared that he and the All Progressives Congress governors were doing all within their powers to ensure that Nigeria moves forward. The President made the declaration shortly before he went into a closed door meeting with 12 governors, who paid him a visit at his country home on Kongolam Road, Daura, Katsina State.
He stated, “It’s not easy for us in this country to make people appreciate what we have gone through, but if you try to discuss in relation to time and resources, then you will appreciate what the APC government has done. “So, I think all of us have done our best and we thank God that within the resources and time available, God has helped us and we have succeeded; otherwise, we would have been in trouble.
“So, I thank you very much for the visit, including those who have recently joined the party. “I assure you that our intellectuals and historians will be expected to be fair to the APC government to examine the time and resources within which we operate, so that for those who are looking for positions of excellence in the Presidency and the governors not exposed to know the ignorance or lack of political knowledge of the ordinary people and feed them with lies.” The President noted that before his regime came into power, the security situation was terrible in the North-East, adding that the situation there had improved now.
He added that the involvement of troops in tackling banditry in the North- West had also assisted in clipping the wings of the bandits in the region. Twelve governors were in attendance at the meeting, which began a few minutes to 4pm and ended about an hour later. The governors are those of Lagos, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Kebbi, Abubakar Bagudu; Ekiti, Kayode Fayemi; Katsina, Aminu Masari; Plateau, Simon Lalong; Nasarawa, Abdullahi Sule; Niger, Abubakar Bello; Kano, Abdullahi Ganduje; Osun, Gboyega Oyetola; Cross River, Benedict Ayade; Ebonyi, David Umahi; and Gombe, Muhammed Yahaya.
Also in attendance was a former governor of Zamfara State, Senator Ahmed Yarima. However, the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party, Kola Ologbondiyan, has said history will not be kind to the President because of the damage his regime has done to Nigeria.
He was responding to claims by the President that history would be kind to him for doing so much for Nigeria with so little resources.
Ologbondiyan, who spoke to one of our correspondents on the telephone on Thursday said, “In case Mr President is not aware, the summation of opinion of most Nigerians is that his best is the worst for Nigeria. “In case he is not aware, life in this country has become hellish, brutal and short.
Parents no longer feel safe sending their children to schools for fear of bandits and terrorists, who ransack schools to kidnap children. He promised us security; insecurity has made Nigeria a butt of jokes across Africa. He promised to fight corruption; now, the Aso Rock Villa, where he sits, is the citadel of corruption. “Since 2015 and despite the mountain of corruption in the FIRS, NNPC, NHIS and other parastatals too numerous to mention, all we hear is that he has eased the heads out; he was not elected to ease corrupt people out, but to prosecute them. History will judge him no doubt, but we in the PDP doubt that history will be kind to him considering the damage his rule has done to our institutions and national cohesion.” The House of Representatives Speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila, along with 30 members of the APC had earlier in the day visited the President.
Although sources said the Speaker and his entourage were in Daura to pay Sallah homage to the President, it was learnt that political issues took centre stage at the closed door meeting. Sources said Buhari would return to Abuja today (Friday).
