Most artists misconstrue artist management to mean sponsorship or a recording deal. It is NEVER the case. Artist management is not sponsorship. There's a big difference between artist management and recording deal.

Whereas the artist manager is obligated to: 
 
1 Protect the interest of the artist 
2 Develop and grow the artist 
3 Seek new opportunities for the artist

It is not the duty of the artist manager to invest his personal resources in promoting the artist.

In the real sense, the job of the artist manager is to GUIDE the artist to achieve the above mentioned goals.

So, the job of the artist manager is:

1 To GUIDE the artist on releasing and promoting music professionally. 

Here the artist manager play a crucial role of release planning and execution. He figures out the important strategies to be implemented in marketing a musical release as well as the necessary professionals to get on board in order to have the job done be it a music distributor, music publisher, influencers, PR experts, and all.

Artists can unlock new opportunities like collaborations, paid showcases, image rights and brand endorsements via effective music release and marketing.

2 To GUIDE the artist in order not to be exploited by sharks or hawks in the industry.

Here the artist manager is on hand to negotiate deals and contracts in favour of the artist. Whether it is split agreements, commercial event engagements, recording deals or image rights the manager is there to ensure that the artist is not exploited.

3 To GUIDE artist on self development and evolution

To remain relevant, artist must continue to develop musically and image wise. It is the duty of the manager to ensure that artist is very much competitive musically and his brand or image still appreciated.

Once again, artists can only unlock new opportunities like we mentioned earlier if they're still relevant. 

The only way to remain relevant is for artist to ALWAYS evolve his sound and brand according to the trends of the moment.

It is the job of the manager to guide the artist accordingly.

4 To GUIDE artist branding ideals and strategies to make artist popular and relevant beyond music.

Aside from release planning and marketing executions, it is the job of the artist manager to implement other strategies that could enhance the brand and popularity of the artist. 

The manager's job is to define an ideal identity of the artist, stick to a branding concept and define strategies that could make the artist more popular.

5 To GUIDE the artist in setting up and managing a team

The artist needs the support of various music professionals to succeed. It is the duty of the artist manager to setup and manage this team.
